The Fourth Annual Women’s Leadership Symposium: Framing Art and Protest will be held on Wednesday, March 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Kent State’s University Library, 1125 Risman Drive in Kent, Ohio.
Admission to the symposium is free; however, registration is required. Attendees may register at bit.ly/4thWomenSym.
The keynote speaker will be Catherine Holmes, manager of the Office for New Americans, located in Syracuse, New York. The vital center assists new Americans as they navigate civic and economic life in New York. Holmes’ address will focus on the current status and services granted to refugees in America. In particular, she will discuss the implications of the Executive Order: Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorists Entry into the United States.
Prior to her current position, Holmes worked for Catholic Charities as a Medicaid service coordinator and later as the volunteer coordinator. She also gained experience during her 15-year employment as a recreation therapist at Elmcrest Children’s Center where she worked with troubled youth.
Additional speakers include:
• Photographer and documentarian Brenda Kenneally, winner of the Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography, a Soros Criminal Justice Fellowship and a Mother Jones Award for Upstate Girls, a documentary on the working poor of Troy, New York.
• Artist Cassie Phillips will present Art as Protest.
• Photographer Laura Fong will present The Standing Rock Sioux Spirit and DAPL Pipeline.
• Additional sessions will feature art, drama and protest.
